Dean Balie is originally from Steinkopf in the Northern Cape. After many school plays and music projects, a life in the performing arts seemed evident. After graduating from Steinkopf High school in 2007, he studied Drama at the University of Stellenbosch and graduated in 2010. His professional debut came in 2009 when he appeared in the Maynardville production of Antony & Cleopatra, directed by Marthinus Basson. In 2010 he was part of the Big 5 festival in Holland where the workshop play Rhinoerotics was created. In 2011 he was nominated for a Fiesta award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as ‘Savage’ in Die Kortstondige Raklewe van Anastasia W (KKNK, Aardklop), also directed by Basson. He has also worked on two different productions of the popular annual kiddies play at Artscape Kipper in Kipper and the magic carpet (2011) and Kipper and the circus (2014). A popular voice on RSG radio station working on poetry and sound, and different radio dramas directed by Margot Luyt and Eben Cruywagen. Other plays include Korte Mette met die Versamelde Werke van William Shakespeare (2011), Willy Russel’s Blood Brothers adapted and directed by David Kramer (2013-2014, Dis my mense die (2013), Orpheus in Africa (2015) and Robin Hood (2015). He also won a coveted Fleur du Cap for ‘Best actor in a musical 2012’ for his role as ‘Kat Diamond’ in David Kramer and Taliep Petersen’s Kat and the Kings. He is currently featured on “Ekstra Medium” as ‘Slappies’ on Kyknet.
