Jawaahier Petersen entered the entertainment world as the anchor of the SABC’s flagship Islamic magazine programme An-Nur (The Light) in the mid-2000’s which kick-started her career as a television presenter. After completing a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Cape Town, Jawaahier started the Afri-Kaaps band, Die Jaloersbokkies, along with SAMA-Award winning Afrikaans singer Nedine Blom in 2013. Jawaahier vocally co-leads the act, which celebrates the unique sounds of Cape cultural music in full 1950’s vintage garb. The band’s musical production Jaloersbokkies FM received rave reviews and has been enjoyed by many festival-going audiences including those of Die Woordfees, Die Suidoosterfees and Aardklop and went on to win the Ghoema award for Best Traditional/Boere Musiek Album for their debut album Piekniekliedjies in 2017.
With her presenting experience on Afrikaans television shows including KLOP! And DEKATv, the move to follow her first love-acting, was inevitable. Jawaahier played the role of the no-nonsense English teacher Amina Haroun on Kyknet en Kie’s first telenovela Arendsvlei and has became a familiar face on the popular local soap opera Suidooster in the role of Kaashifa.
